About The Song
The song's title, combined with the title of another track from "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out," comprises a line from the movie Closer. When asked to tell one thing that is the truth, Natalie Portman's character says, "Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off... but it's better if you do." Ryan Ross, lyricist for Panic! At The Disco, has stated that both songs are about a breakup he went through, though each song seems to look at different phases of the breakup. Referring to "But It's Better If You Do," he says:
"That was the first song I wrote after "Lying...", and I switched how I wrote lyrics. It was still about that break-up, but it's just a story about how a guy would deal with getting over somebody that he loved. It's a fictional story. I wanted to be able to paint a picture in somebody's mind, if they closed their eyes and listened I would hope that they would picture how our video is for that song."
He gave some additional insight into the song in an interview with MTV:
When Panic! at the Disco guitarist/lyricist Ryan Ross was writing his band's latest single, "But It's Better If You Do," he had some pretty lofty goals in mind.
"It's a song about being in a strip club but not actually liking being in there. So I wanted it to be about the sort of complex inner-monologue," he said. "It's not completely fiction, though. It's based on a scenario when I was going through a breakup with a girl, and I was in one of these clubs but wishing I didn't have to be. Because in reality, I don't like strip clubs. I think they're kind of ecch."
His lyrics discuss sweaty lap dances, a dancer who "sheds her skin onstage" and a portly strip-club regular ("I imagined some fat business guy with a cigar," Ross said. "Just some guy who comes in every day after work"), reflecting that "ecch" attitude.
